Publishing a Community Newspaper

Overview

Newspapers can tell us a lot about a community and the people living there. This activity is a fun way to understand a newspaper's role in a community. Working together, the class will "print" an issue of the Orlando Sentinel from late nineteenth or early 20th Century.

Procedure

1. The class will pick a date to publish the newspaper.
2. Students will brainstorm the columns and information the newspaper should have.
3. Assign a small group to each section (i.e. advertising, society column, front page, etc.)
4. Using the information from the CFM website, the groups will find information for their section The class will then put the sections together and "print" their edition of the paper!
