Classroom Activity
Publishing a Community Newspaper
Overview
Newspapers can tell us a lot about a community and the people living there. This activity is a fun way to understand a newspaper's role in a community. Working together, the class will "print" an issue of the Orlando Sentinel from late nineteenth or early 20th Century.
Procedure
- The class will pick a date to publish the newspaper.
- Students will brainstorm the columns and information the newspaper should have.
- Assign a small group to each section (i.e. advertising, society column, front page, etc.)
- Using the information from the CFM website, the groups will find information for their section The class will then put the sections together and "print" their edition of the paper!
